Why the Name?

Bennett Liam Walter

We chose Bennett for three reasons.  I was sitting in our family room one day and looked over and saw an old book of my grandma's called "The Laughs on Me" by an author named Bennett Cerf.  He was the co-founder of Random House and a comic writer.  I liked the name so much so I told Debbie who also liked it.  Click here for an article about Bennett Cerf.

Another reason that we chose Bennett was paying homage to the novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin.  Some of the best characters ever written were the the entire Bennett family.  Debbie and I have loved that story for such a long time and loved the idea of a classic literature name for our child.

Lastly we chose Bennett because the name means "blessed" and we certainly are blessed!

Liam is shortened for William.  A family tradition in my family has been going on for almost 75 years of naming children William ------ Walter and calling them by their middle names.  It is too hard to do that in this computer age we are in.  My grandfather was William (Bill) J. Walter, my father is William Paul Walter, my brother William David Walter and I am William Stephen Walter.  Lucky my brother stopped it first so I didn't have to feel any guilt!  Debbie also has the name William in her family.  Her grandfathers were both Williams.  Charles William (Bill) Linn and William Weaver Alvey.  Her father is Richard William Linn and her brother is Ryan William Linn.

I was done with the name William and Debbie was not.  She wanted to use it somehow since it was such a family name on both sides!  I finally found this version and it was a great compromise.

We are in love with this boy and are thankful every day for him!  We know the name is solid and strong and we know he will make all his family proud (those before and after him).

Chillin' Around the House

At Halloween.  Lucy loves him and wants to lick him.  Maggie doesn't care at all.  As long as she is fed and walked.
Maggie and Lucy are acting the exact way we expected them to act.  Lucy wants to protect and love him and Maggie doesn't care.  No accidents, no problems (except occasional barking).
He loves to sleep.  He is so relaxed most of the time.  We are very lucky to have such a good baby.  Sweetest thing ever!
Seriously we have had a stressful two weeks since he was born but he is so awesome!  He loves to roll to his side and seriously doesn't do much crying.  We even got 6 hours of sleep one night!  We are so proud of our little man!  We will have more pictures in a week or so!!!

Grandparents Close By

Dear Bennett,

One of the hardest yet happiest times of my life was the day you were born.  Happiest because you were perfect and we were in love with you, but hard because your Grandma Judy and Great Grandma Mamoo weren't here to see your beautiful face!  We take great comfort in knowing that there were so many loved ones who prepared you for coming into this world and into our family.  Great Grandpa Linn, Great Grandpa Alvey, Great Grandparents Walter, and Papoo.  We love them all so much and miss them every day.  We know that you were a miracle sent to us from our Heavenly Father and your spirit was touched by those who helped to raise us!

One of the most touching moments for me in the hospital happened on my walks in and out of the hospital.  Right inside the entrance to the hospital is a picture that seems very out of place for the design in this part of the hospital.  It is old and faded and doesn't fit the decor.

The picture of the Grand Canyon
This same picture used to hang in Mamoo and Papoo's family room.  It made me feel so good knowing that Mamoo and Papoo were close in spirit.

My other experience in the hospital was viewing these three pictures that were hanging right outside of our room in the hallway.
Grandma Judy used to have these pictures hanging in her bedroom.  This one made me very emotional each time I would walk to our room.

Our experience in the hospital was so amazing and I really feel that one of the biggest reason for that is that the Spirit was so strong there!  We really felt so close to all those who have passed that you didn't have the opportunity to meet here on earth!

One also that was so fresh on our minds was Great Grandpa Linn.  You made him a great grandpa!  He would have loved and adored you and we miss him so much!

We are so grateful that you were born into our family and that we are an eternal family!  Our family will be together forever with all those who have passed.  That is the biggest blessing of them all!

Love always,

Daddy and Mommy

Bennett's Birth Story

Dear Bennett,

On October 24th, 2011 mommy went to the Doctor for her weekly visit.  We were anticipating your arrival around the 29th so we were getting very excited!  During her visit mommy was told you were right side up (which means upside down in the baby world!)

So mommy called daddy and we made an appointment for early the next morning to have you turned.  We took all of our stuff incase we decided not to turn you and have you c section.  After consulting with the doctor we decided that the turning sounded super painful and wasn't a guarentee.  So the doctor and nurses admitted us to the hospital to prepare for the surgery.

We waited for about 2 hours until they were ready to take us in.
Mommy and daddy all ready to head into surgery
We went into the operating room.  Mommy and daddy were both very nervous and anxious!  We wanted to make sure everything was ok with you.

Dr. Glenn started the surgery and we waited about 5-10 minutes and you arrived!  You were so breached that you were bent in half and you came out butt first!  You were beautiful!  We fell in love with you the moment we saw you!  You were born at 12:42pm weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces and 19 inches long.  You were perfect!
You came out wanting to suck on everything!

This was the beginning of our experience with amazing nurses!

I went with you as they measured and took you to the nursery.  You were a little fussy but overall pretty good.  The nurses took great care of you.  While mommy got stitched up we notified all the family of your birth.  Everyone was so excited!
You had to much hair!  You were so cute!
After a while I went back to see mommy and told her all about you!  She was so anxious to see you.  We headed to our room that would be our home for the next 3 days.  It was a nice big room.  You made my wife a mommy and everything changed.  She would do anything for you!  She loved you the moment she found out she was having you!

Wide awake!  You love to just stare at the surrounding world!

You love the binky (most of the time.)  You are obsessed with your hands.  You love them right next to your face at all times.

Our favorite outfit.  This is the outfit you went home in.

Snuggling with Mommy
We had the most amazing experience in the hospital.  The nurses were amazing!  They took such good care of you and Mommy.  There were so many amazing people that helped you get settled into this great big world!  We couldn't have said thank you enough for the nurses!  Mommy left the hospital feeling like she had been on vacation.
Two of our favorite nurses (they were with us the longest)
Your little feet

Swaddled like a burrito.  You love to be swaddled.

All ready to leave the hospital!  It was so nice to be home.
We had amazing visitors while in the hospital.  Great Grandma Linn, Aunt Katie, Aunt Tami, Meili, Eliah, Ana, Carol Louw, Jessica Apsley and of course the whole Nelson family!  It brightened our day each time we had a visitor.

Thank you to all who visited, sent emails, sent messages on Facebook, sent flowers and just cared.  We felt so loved!  Bennett sends his love also!
