I saw this wall art from Restoration Hardware and I decided that I wanted to try to make this for the baby's room and I would do it for under $20 dollars.
I bought 3 (16 x 20) canvases. I bought the flat ones because they were much less. I like to look of the raised ones better but for this I wanted to try to see inexpensive I could make this.
I painted the canvases a grey color, because I am trying to stay away from too much blue in the boys room. While they were drying I cut out a bunch of rectangles on, my Cricut. I wanted them to look perfect, so the Cricut really helped with this. I figured that since the canvases were 16 x 20 I would need to cut each rectangle at 5 x 6.33. I took one inch off the length and the width and then divided the length and width by 3 to get my lengths. I used my gypsy, this way I could set the exact size I wanted to cut.
I picked out an assortment of papers that were in the green, blue, yellow, and tan family. I used mainly paper from Crate Paper. I got some samples from them a while back and I am so glad that I had them still since it really helped me get the look that I wanted.
After I cut out all 27 of them (yes there is one that has a star on it) I laid them out on the floor and moved them around till they were in a pleasing configuration. My Sweet husband helped be figure out where I wanted them.
I got some of my graphics from the graphics fairy at www.graphicsfairy.blogspot.com. They have such cute vintage prints, and they had some that looked the same at the original Restoration Hardware wall art. I found all the ones that I wanted and then I just printed them on regular paper, and measured them to make sure that they would not be too big for the space.
I cut them out and laid them on the tiles to make sure that’s where I wanted them. Then with my trusty Zig pen I glued them down. I wrote the letters on the back of the tiles to make sure that they stayed in order.
I then got out some grey, brown, and creme card stock and prepared to cut out all my letters. I have written down ahead of time what cartridges I wanted to use and so I just measure each tile space to make sure that I cut the letter as small or large as I needed it. I mixed up all the colors so it would look more scattered. Then I glued down all the letters and distressed the edges with some ink.
My husband helped me lay them out upside down in the correct order and I taped then together (not all the way, just a small piece on each). I thought it would be easier to line up one big piece and not 9 small ones. I left about a half inch of the grey around the edges and attached the tiles to the canvas. I sprayed them with some craft adhesive and then put a layer of Modge Podge on top.
They dried overnight and in the morning I had the finished product.
It was a little work and I could not have done it without my sweet husband, he always call me on stuff when I am messing something up.

Here is the finished project. It was pretty easy just a little time consuming. I love the pop it gives the room!
